Simulation Model Development

Locus specializes in hydrodynamic ship modeling development and has experience in developing a vast range of ship models. Recent Kongsberg simulation models include Robert Allen-designed escort tugs, Jensen-designed escort tugs, z-drive and conventional propulsion supply vessels, LNG vessels, and a seismic research vessel with deployed production acoustic array and large semi-submersible oil exploration platforms for ocean towing exercises.

Oil Rig Modeling

Challenge

Locus was tasked with an urgent modeling request for a large semi-submersible oil exploration rig to be used in multi-tug offshore towing exercises. The oil rig was required to have accurate towing dynamics in a seaway given the use of three towboats using hawsers to tow and position the rig. The rig needed precise visual and motion dynamics in six-degrees of freedom and responsiveness to tow forces as provided by the customer's experience.

Results

In less than ten days, Locus delivered a "ready to test" model of the semi-submersible oil rig. The model was validated and iterative changes were made in one engineering session, resulting in a reliable model ready for use by the customer in record time. Locus was on-call and made minor model changes during the customer's use of the model to ensure success. The customer was so pleased with the model, Locus has subsequently created two different versions of the model in ballast draft conditions for variability in towing performance.

Tractor Tug Modeling

Challenge

Locus created a simulation model of a Robert Allen-designed tractor tug. The client desired the highest fidelity model possible and wanted the model integrated to their actual tug hardware controls and configured in a ship simulator. Locus embarked on an engineering challenge to create highest fidelity tractor tug model possible.

Results

Using the extensive data from the tug's naval architect combined with on-board data collected from the actual tug, Locus created an exceptional high-fidelity tractor tug model. To provide for adjustable "indirect" towing forces, Locus developed proprietary software to estimate and add the skeg forces developed by an escort tug during high speed escort maneuvers. Locus integrated the model to the actual tug controls in the ship simulator, which has been used to great success in a number of training and research projects.
